New Year... New Dog?!

Last month, Laura and I adopted this adorable hound mix, Fianna, from the Gloucester Animal Shelter. She came to us as a very anxious and perpetually sad girl - alas, her previous family ended up homeless during the pandemic, and was living out of a car
However, over the last several weeks, she's started to settle in and trust us. She now likes to snuggle and play and keep me company while writing! Fianna is a great reminder that every day we have the chance to start something new and put the past (and regrets) behind us.

The Circle Reforged!

January marked the first official meeting of the Word Still Writer's Cricle! I blogged about the formation of a new writers circle after the dissolution of my previous one several years ago, if you'd like to read more about it, and there's also quite a few comments that came in from you all as well as members of the IWSG. I'm grateful to have this important aspect of writer support back in place. Looking forward to many more (whiskey-infused) collaborative creative sessions with Chris and Micheal.

Writing Update

The Karma of Ponds received another personal rejection last month, which is great! Editors rarely take the time to provide a personal rejection, especially one with concrete advice, unless they believe the story has strong potential. The editor's comments aligned with some I had received before from a workshop, so I made some changes and submitted again to another market. We'll see...

Rassam's Eye has continued to feel bogged down, but has still made about 9000 words of progress in the new year. The Writers Circle workshopped several of the earlier draft opening scenes, and we had a great idea jam on the threads that seem to be trying to emerge. I'd really like to finish this project this year... need to get on it.

I lot of creative energy lately has been going into the homebrew Dungeons and Dragons, 5th Edition campaign I will be starting in May, called The Heart of the Empire. Interestingly, I think I've created a world and in particular a few characters in that world, that I believe could form the basis of a series of novellas or perhaps even another novel (which would be my first attempt at long-form fantasy). Nothing formal sketched out yet, but wheels turning.

Fiction Consumed This Month

Books:
  • I started Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself last month and was initially very excited about it. However, I do feel that it started to drag around 60%. I think I'm at around 80% and have been hanging there for awhile... maybe I just got busy. Would still like to finish it.
What have you been reading or watching? Any recommendations for me?

Happy New Year and wishing you all the best in 2022!
I do love getting your feedback and comments, so please continue to reach out. Thanks for reading, and see you in the next issue!
